Acroyoga
Are you interested in a new hobby? Do you want to meet new friends in a welcoming non-competitive acro community? Acroyoga and partner acrobatics are playful activities in which you not only learn techniques and tricks, but you’ll have endless laughs along the way!
What exactly is acroyoga?
Acroyoga is a combination of yoga, partner acrobatics, and Thai massage. In recent years, acroyoga has become more and more popular, mainly because it is a fun activity that you can practice with your partner or friends. During practice, you not only laugh, but also strengthen and stretch the whole body. Many of our acroyoga students were so enthusiastic that after a few lessons, it became their lifelong hobby. Acroyoga is also an excellent way to start doing more advanced partner acrobatics because the foundational principles are the same.
Is acroyoga for me? Is it necessary to have previous experience with gymnastics or other sports?
Acroyoga is for everyone! The beautiful thing about acroyoga is that many skills and positions look challenging, but with proper instruction, anyone can learn them during a single class. There is no need to have any previous experience with gymnastics or other demanding sports, all you need to do is show up. Surprisingly, acroyoga is not age-restricted. At our regular courses, we have both young couples and couples around the age of 60 who enjoy learning new skills and refining their practice all the same.
Acroyoga roles
Although you might think that acroyogis fill one of two roles due to the nature of pair training, this is not the case! For a successful learning experience we need 3 - FLYER, BASE and SPOTTER
Flyer, Base, and Spotter
The flyer is the one up in the air! The flyer’s task is often to trust the base and keep their shape. Gradually, during the course, flyers build awareness of their body and learn to support and control themselves in inversions = positions upside down.
The task of the Base is to be stable and to support the flyer. Most bases build flexibility and stability very quickly, so after a few lessons we usually teach not only static positions, but also our first transitions or movements between positions.
Spotters play a very important role in acroyoga by providing safety for the flyer, and a third pair of eyes for troubleshooting technique. Spotting itself is a separate discipline that students learn during the course. Depending on the complexity of the skill, you may need one or two spotters who will support you if you fall to prevent both injury and the fear of injury. For each skill we teach, we always provide a spotting demonstration. During lessons students normally work in groups of 3 or 4.
