Handstand course
Why learn handstands?
Practicing handstands builds self-confidence and improves stability of the whole body. It teaches us to trust ourselves and at the same time, calms the mind and breath because when we stop concentrating, breathing, and properly engaging the whole body, we fall.
Anyone can learn to balance on their hands. All you need is determination, and patience.
Our approach
In our lessons we focus on handstand technique that is specifically useful for doing handstands on people, as well as balancing on the ground. At the same time, we also recognize that every student is different, and may benefit from a variety of approaches to handstand technique.
When learning to stand on our hands, we are presented with the same problems we solved when learning to stand on our feet as children. The principles of balance are exactly the same, however we are switching the feet for the hands, and the hips for the shoulders. When learning handstands, it is important to develop strength and mobility in joints specific to handstands to allow for efficient technique. At the same time, we must program the nervous system to allow for accurate proprioception and intelligent control of the body while upside down.
In our lessons, you will learn:
Exercises to strengthen, mobilize, and prevent injury to the wrists, shoulders, torso, and hips.
Entrances to handstands including kicking and jumping from 2 feet.
Spotting! Learning handstands with a spotter is a great way to learn while minimizing risk.
Alignment drills for achieving different shapes in a handstand.
Techniques for learning how to balance (and fall) on your own safely!
